Flu, Influenza Causes, Symptoms and Treatment









INTRODUCTION
Influenza (commonly called the flu) is a highly contagious illness that can occur in children or adults of any age. It occurs more often in the winter months because people spend more time in close contact with one another. The flu is spread easily from person-to-person by coughing, sneezing, or touching surfaces.
Every year, complications of the flu require more than 200,000 people in the United States to be hospitalized. Serious illness is more likely in the very young, older adults, pregnant women, and people who have certain health problems such as asthma or other forms of lung disease.
There have been several widespread flu outbreaks (called pandemics), which led to the deaths of many people worldwide. These outbreaks occurred when new strains of influenza viruses formed (often from pigs or birds) and humans became infected because they had no immunity to these viruses.
This article discusses the symptoms and treatment of seasonal, swine H1N1, and avian flu. Treatments to prevent the flu, including the flu shot, are discussed separately.

What are the causes of the flu? 

The flu (influenza) viruses


Influenza viruses cause the flu and are divided into three types, designated A, B, and C. Influenza types A and B are responsible for epidemics of respiratory illness that occur almost every winter and are often associated with increased rates of hospitalization and death. Influenza type C differs from types A and B in some important ways. Type C infection usually causes either a very mild respiratory illness or no symptoms at all; it does not cause epidemics and does not have the severe public-health impact of influenza types A and B. Efforts to control the impact of influenza are aimed at types A and B, and the remainder of this discussion will be devoted only to these two types.

Influenza viruses continually change over time, usually by mutation (change in the viral RNA). This constant changing often enables the virus to evade the immune system of the host (humans, birds, and other animals) so that the host is susceptible to changing influenza virus infections throughout life. This process works as follows: a host infected with influenza virus develops antibodies against that virus; as the virus changes, the "first" antibody no longer recognizes the "newer" virus and infection can occur because the host does not recognize the new flu virus as a problem until the infection is well under way. The first antibody developed may, in some instances, provide partial protection against infection with a new influenza virus. In 2009, almost all individuals had no antibodies that could recognize the novel H1N1 virus immediately.

Type A viruses are divided into subtypes or strains based on differences in two viral surface proteins called the hemagglutinin (H) and the neuraminidase (N). There are at least 16 known H subtypes and nine known N subtypes. These surface proteins can occur in many combinations. When spread by droplets or direct contact, the virus, if not killed by the host's immune system, replicates in the respiratory tract and damages host cells. In people who are immune compromised (for example, pregnant individuals, infants, cancer patients, asthma patients, people with pulmonary disease and many others), the virus can cause viral pneumonia or stress the individual's system to make them more susceptible to bacterial infections, especially bacterial pneumonia. Both pneumonia types, viral and bacterial, can cause severe disease and sometimes death.

Antigenic shift and drift
Influenza type A viruses undergo two kinds of changes. One is a series of mutations that occurs over time and causes a gradual evolution of the virus. This is called antigenic "drift." The other kind of change is an abrupt change in the hemagglutinin and/or the neuraminidase proteins. This is called antigenic "shift." In this case, a new subtype of the virus suddenly emerges. Type A viruses undergo both kinds of changes; influenza type B viruses change only by the more gradual process of antigenic drift and therefore do not cause pandemics.

The 2009 pandemic-causing H1N1 virus is a classic example of antigenic shift. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has indicated that novel H1N1 swine flu has an RNA genome that contains five RNA strands derived from various swine flu strains, two RNA strands from bird flu (also termed avian flu) strains, and only one RNA strand from human flu strains. They suggest mainly antigenic shifts over about 20 years have led to the development of novel H1N1 flu virus. A diagram that illustrates both antigenic shift and drift can be found below (see Figure 2) and features influenza A types H1N1 and bird flu, but almost every influenza A viral strain can go through these processes that changes the viral RNA.

Swine flu Symptoms and Treatment







Swine flu is a fatal epidemic disease whose germs are injected through flue. The ground source of this ailment is influenza virus. According to health organization 2005 to 2007, America and Spain was the ground victim of Swine flu. The reason of which can be those animals that were infected by this particular virus.

Back Pain Causes Symptoms and Treatment








Backaches are usually experienced by people who are 20 and above, or people who are bulky in weight experience this pain. If this pain is minimal than it heals on its own after a while, but if it is extreme then it can cause different problems.

Symptoms:
In backaches parts of the back become weak. Walking and running causes pain. Along with back ache, you start to expereince pain in the legs also, and this pain gradually spreads towards the hip. The patient feels extreme discomfort and cannot bend easily. In cases of extreme pain, fever may also be caused. Apart from that, problems like headaches and restlessness can also happed with backaches.

Causes:
Amongst the causes of back ache, the weakness of different parts of the back is the most important one. Apart from that, people who are overweight are a victim to backaches because they are tired of walking around and hence, back muscles become weak due to which backaches takes place. Sitting on a chair in wrong posture, sleeping upside down, and bending and working for long hours can also cause back aches. Getting hurt in childhood can cause the spine discs to be affected, and later on extreme pain is experienced because if any of the discs moves from its position then pressure is put on the nerves and as a result parts of the legs and back become weak causing pain in bending forwards and backwards. Other than that causes of backaches include trauma, postural back pain, depression, swelling in the pelvis and various other tumours  Bowel Syndrome is a disease which usually happens in young females, due to which constipation and stomach-ache is experienced; the strength of these problems can also cause backaches.

Backache during Pregnancy:
Most females can experience physical weakness and low vitamin levels during pregnancy. Pregnant women usually experience postural back pain, due to which while walking extreme pain can be felt. The causes of this are constipation, restlessness, and impatience. This causes the whole body to ache. The patient feels restless and on edge, and doesn’t fell like doing anything. In cases of extreme back ache, vomiting and headaches can also happen; in this case any pain reliever or Maxolan can be given.
Apart from this a pelvic disease, in which the fibers of the uterus become weak, can also cause back aches. For this, all patients must get a thorough and complete laboratory check up. Phosphorous, calcium and alkaline levels in blood must be checked. Urine test should be done to check protein levels; in women Rectum and Hips should be internally monitored through Colonoscopy so that appropriate treatment can be given.

Treatment:
Treatment for backache should only be done after thorough check ups from Neuro physicians and surgeons, since due to different causes of backaches the treatment is different. However, to overcome this problem, changes in your everyday life activities should be made. Sleep on your right hand side; sleeping on your stomach can cause backaches; do not work or study for long hours while keeping your back bent throughout. If the patient has constipation, then it should be treated and complete bed rest should be done.
To relieve you of the pain temporarily, some Analgesic medicine should be used. If the pain is extreme then any Analgesic and Narcotic medicine can be used.

Measles Causes Symptoms and Treatment








Measles:
Measles is a fatal infectious disease, which is more common in children. Virus of this disease is not itself that much dangerous but it causes other fatal diseases in patient. In the beginning, patients suffer from high fever then it causes weakness and skin diseases. In Pakistan the main reason of measles is its lack of awareness. Due to lack of knowledge 40% children fell prey to Pneumonia after measles, which is fatal and life threatening. To create awareness among you people we elaborate the symptoms of measles, causes measles and measles treatment in this article.

Causes:
Measles is caused by a virus named as Paramyxo Virus, which has the smallest particles/germs that cannot even pass from filter paper. To check their presence or to see these germs, electron microscope is used. It is a contagious disease that can be transferred through physical or direct contact with the patient. It attacks on the immunity system of the patients and they become prone to the other dangerous diseases as well.

Symptoms of Measles:
High temperature is the common symptom of measles. Other symptoms of measles are flu, redness of the eyes, mouth blisters, swelling of mouth and pimples filled with puss called Koplik’s Spots. These are of red color; appear on the body of patient on the sixth day of the disease. If the patient does not get proper treatment, the red spots/pimples would turn to black color.
Due to absence of medical treatment, the patient may has to suffer from pneumonia, which is very dangerous.

Treatment of Measles:
As we have mentioned that, this disease is common among children. If you kid is suffering from measles then you should make sure his rest at home. The patient needs a very good care to be taken because it is very hazardous syndrome.
Globuman injection is injected to the patient and the amount of Globuman varies with the weight. It is recommended that 5 ml per kilogram should be injected to the patient.
Rebavarin syrup is also very effective and 10 ml of this syrup should be given to the patient. This amount can vary from patient to patient according to the patient’s weight.
For pain and reducing the temperature of the body, you should use Ponston syrup. For the children of age from 6 months to 1 year, 5 ml after each hour is sufficient but you should take care that if the patient is not recovering in 5 – 7 days then stop using these medication and consult to the doctor.

Infantile Diarrhoea or Diarrhea: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment



Diarrhea is opposite of constipation and it involves frequent passing of loose and watery stools. There are many causes of diarrhea, which may be infectious or noninfectious. If diarrhea is found in kids then it is probably infectious because kids have weak immune power against the diarrhea. The main reason behind the diarrhea in kids is the lack of water, calcium and minerals. Diarrhea found in the kids above one year old is called infantile diarrhea. There are many causes of infantile diarrhea in kids. Some of them are as follow:
  • The main reason behind infantile diarrhea in kids is when the mother stops breastfeeding. Breast milk contains the right balance of nutrients and most importantly in digestible form. Antibodies are passed to kid through breast milk which helps the kid’s body to fight against bacteria and other viruses.
  • Cleanliness is very important for the kid’s health as cleanliness minimizes the chances of kids being exposed to bacteria and other viruses. Children, mothers of whom do not maintain cleanliness is likely to be a victim of infant diarrhea.
  • Dry milk is another major source of infantile diarrhea as it can affect the digestive system hence causing diarrhea.
  • Drinking too much fruit juice can also result infantile diarrhea.
Due to above mentioned cases, there are many other diseases kids catch beside infantile diarrhea. A child gets extremely weak due to the lack of minerals and water in the body. It is very important to protect kids from infantile diarrhea. Mothers should take the following precautions to save their kids from this disease.
  • Don’t use dummy rubber nipples to make baby quiet as it exposes baby to germs that are on the rubber nipple.
  • The mother should feed the baby with her own milk only because as there is no substitute of mother’s milk for better growth of the baby and it also saves baby from certain digestive diseases.
  • Don’t feed any other food to the baby other than breast milk until he is 3 months old.
  • Keep baby away from the messy and dirty environment and give special attention to maintain the cleanliness around the baby.
  • Do not feed baby animal’s nutrients as it does not contain all the nutrients needed for proper and healthy growth of the baby.
Diarrhea can be controlled by three methods; Dehydration, ORS and Feeding. As the name suggests, ‘Re hydration’ means to feed baby a fluid to level the water and minerals needed by the body. For this purpose breast milk is given to the baby more frequently as well as other liquid stuff. ORS contains salt and mineral one pack of ORS should be mixed in one litter water and should be given to baby time by time. Other soft foods mixed in milk should also be given to the baby along with breast milk like boiled rice and bananas, corn flakes etc.
